African buffalo are among the most dangerous animals in Africa (the others being elephants, black rhinos, hippos, and crocodiles). They are the most aggressive and temperamental species, and one of the animals that have caused the most injuries in Africa. Injured, lone, or mother buffalo with calves are particularly aggressive, as dangerous as lions and leopards.

The savanna subspecies can form large herds of over 1000 individuals. Due to their relatively narrow habitat, forest buffalo typically form small groups of up to 12 individuals, including adult females and their offspring, as well as one or more males.

Males that do not belong to a herd are solitary or form bachelor herds. Living in a herd has its advantages, as herd members can share the best pasture food and it also provides better protection against predators.

In African buffalo herds, cooperation among females is strong. If a member is attacked by a predator such as a lion, the rest of the herd will respond to its roars for help and hastily defend themselves.

A herd of buffalo can easily drive away an entire pride of lions, protecting the safety of the entire herd. The size of the forest buffalo herd is not important because they inhabit a habitat unsuitable for predators such as lions, and can easily find hiding places if needed.

To escape the heat, African buffalo spend most of their time in the shade. They often appear near drinking water ponds in the early morning and evening, and most of their feeding takes place on the cooler nights.

African buffalo graze on fresh grasslands, but when grazing is scarce, they turn to herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees.

The diet of African buffalo opens up long grassland areas for other species with more selective food habits, thus playing an important ecological role in the savanna of sub-Saharan Africa.
